I was so disappointed to read the ramblings of the Leader of Bridgwater Town Council in last week’s Bridgwater Mercury, once again spending far too much time on childish rubbish. It’s such a shame, and it's something that should, but will not, benefit the Town Council, says Councillor Gill Slocombe - Conservative Group Leader on Bridgwater Town Council.
Why he is so worried about the Conservative Party is beyond me! Yes things are different, but we only have one way to go and that is up, unfortunately the same cannot be said for the government at present with the already broken promises. I want Brian Smedley to concentrate on what is being said in the media, such as Labour taking away our Winter Fuel Payments and the decisions about taking away our prescriptions (no smoke without fire). None of this was in their manifesto, they never said a word. Many people who voted Labour this time are furious about these potential broken promises already.
What we as elected representatives need to spend time on, Brian included, is listening to our constituents such as when road works affect their businesses, bin collections etc. This is what I have been doing. Stop the in-fighting Brian and deal with issues that we can make a difference on. Stop worrying about the Tories, trust me we will rise again, but try not to worry about it!
The one thing that we must do is not expect all our electorate to want to use digital equipment, we must not lose the customer service human element. People want to speak to someone, not press buttons, wait 20 minutes listening to dreadful music, to then only be either cut off or no one listens. The ‘Equalities Act’ means that we must not disenfranchise anyone, in other words don’t expect everyone to want to use a mobile, a computer or iPad. Some people can’t and others just don’t want to. Let’s keep human beings in our Council’s, Banks, Doctors, Dentists Services etc. Nothing can take the place of the human voice.
