LOCAL businesses are pleading with Somerset Council and Avon and Somerset Police to implement a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in Bridgwater due to high crime levels in the town centre.
In a letter to both organisations, the Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce emphasised the 'critical need for action' to address prevalent issues of anti-social behaviour and public drinking in the town centre.
The letter was written following a visit from Avon and Somerset Police Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford, who spoke with local business owners to hear how they had been impacted by crimes in the area.
Figures first uncovered by the Mercury found over 1,000 incidents of violence and sexual offences were reported in the town centre in 2023, along with 397 incidents of anti social behaviour, and 183 shoplifting reports.
Bridgwater Councillor Diogo Rodrigues said: “Past experiences with a PSPO have demonstrated its effectiveness in curbing anti-social behaviour and fostering a sense of security among residents and visitors.
"Therefore, the Chamber firmly believes that the reintroduction of a PSPO will provide much-needed relief to town centre businesses and create a safer, more welcoming environment for all.
